Thousands of members of Creative COW were at the 2011 NAB Show, and we are pleased to bring you some of their reports. In this entry, we find that Gary Adcock spent quite a bit of time at NAB working in the AJA booth, which showcased the KiPro Mini software update v.2.5, update for the Kona 3G card, new fibre converters and the FS2 frame sync.

While there seemed to be no earth shaking announcements from industry stalwart AJA video systems, what they did talk about was enough to garner them a Vidy Award for release of the Free 4K update for the Kona 3G card, that actually allows for capture and playback of 4K materials and supporting the both Quad HD and 4K frame rasters, so common with RED users, and now supporting the Sony F65's 4K frames (at least according to the closing credit on the new Sony demo reel).

This free upgrade allows the user to switch between the existing 2K playback mode on the Kona 3G card, with full support for up, down and cross-conversion, S3D playback from Cineform encoded content, to the 4K mode that allows for Quad Link HDSDI (or dual 3G HDSDI) to capture and playback at full 4K resolutions from you're existing setup, provided you have a backplane full of drives necessary to playback content of that magnitude, Aja was showing that playback on a Sony 4K monitor from content in a couple of drive arrays with over 24 physical disks spinning away.

Also released at the show was KiPro Mini software update v.2.5 which offers support for true 25p Varicam acquisition so that the Mini can properly extract the 25/60 found in the tape based F and H model cameras, LANC start stop control and fixes support for full integer frame rates at 1080i30 and 720p60.

Other items include a couple of new fibre converters and the FS2 frame sync, an update that offers studio and facilities fall access to the entire range of audio and video conversions including Demuxing of 3G signals, DOLBY support, Dual 3G /HD/ SD-SDI with embedded audio, Optical fibre, 3D HDMI output, with support for 16 channels of audio . dual keying capabilities, Active format descriptor, even Scan conversion of DVI to HDMI signals.

However the real news at the Aja booth was the future product demo area showing "phaser" a live Thunderbolt video capture playing back within an acrylic case from a laptop, right next to "riker" a prototype of the next generation of capture and playback tools, designed to allow formats up to the Epic's current 5K resolution, the "Riker" prototype offers a modular design that may simplify the future of media management. Think about being able to plug in a SSD module or a digital mag from Codex, Stwo , Phantom Camera or even Sony's new SR2 Media modules directly into the break-out box for instantaneous playback and monitoring in the quickly arriving tapeless world. Now media handling and playback no longer need to be the bottleneck to post.
