Article Focus: Thousands of members of Creative COW were at the 2011 NAB Show, and we are pleased to bring you some of their reports. In this entry, Debra Kaufman finds NVIDIA's GPU technology showcased throughout NAB 2011 exhibit, with 3DTV Play, NVIDIA CUDA, Quadro 4000, Quadro 5000, & Quadro 6000 integrating with technologies new to Vizrt, Pixel Power, Quantel, Avid, ARRI, Adobe, Autodesk, Chyron, Perceptive Pixel, IRIDAS and 3ality Digital.
At NAB 2011, NVIDIA made its 3D Vision video player technology available for free to Web developers, which will enable them to build websites for streaming 3D video to 3D Vision-equipped PCs. NVIDIA 3DTV Play software enables consumers to attach their PC or notebook to 3D HDTVs and HDMI 1.4-capable audio/video receivers for full HD 3D with HD surround sound audio. The company was the first to deliver a 3D video plug-in for the Microsoft Media Platform (MMP) Player Frameworkv2.5 (F.K.A. Silverlight Media Framework) with support for active-shutter 3D glasses. The plug-in is based on the same technology that powers NVIDIA's 3D online community. NVIDIA is also releasing a how-to-guide enumerating the key steps and components for developers to integrate 3D streaming video capabilities into websites. The 3D video player plug-in and guide are available here.

NVIDIA was nearly omnipresent on the NAB 2011 show floor in a range of products powered by NVIDIA Quadro GPUs. That included 3ality Digital, which is leveraging the NVIDIA CUDA parallel architecture for its IntelleMatte stereoscopic 3D digital compositing application and IntelleCal automated digital camera alignment software.
NVIDIA Quadro Fermi
Adobe demonstrated Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 software accelerated with NVIDIA Quadro 4000 and Quadro 5000 pro graphics on workstations. Adobe showcased Premiere Pro on an HP EliteBook 8740w mobile workstation with the NVIDIA Quadro 5000M, for video editors on the go. The ARRI Group/ARRI Inc. showed a technical preview of their CUDA-enabled ARRIRAW software development kit (SDK), so app developers can implement real-time processing of ARRIRAW's digital negative using NVIDIA GPUs. IRIDAS demonstrated SpeedGrade, and how RAW workflow enables full resolution, pre-visualization of color decisions on set while maintaining the digital negative.
Other companies that highlighted products integrating NVIDIA processing included Assimilate with its new Scratch digital finishing and Scratch Lab digital lab tools; Autodesk, with both Autodesk Flame Premium 2012 and Autodesk Smoke 2012 for Mac OS X software; Avid with its Media Composer software; Chyron Corporation with its premiere HyperX 3.1 and LEX 3.1 on-air graphics systems; Perceptive Pixel with its new Storyboard live presentation application featuring new TouchCast technology on LCD multi-touch systems; Pixel Power Ltd. with its Clarity, its HD/SD switchable graphics production system; Quantel with its new Qube, an editor for Enterprise sQ systems; and Vizrt with its Viz Engine 3.5.

“I am thrilled to be joining the COW team,” said Debra Kaufman, newly named Associate Editor of Creative COW Magazine. “In an era in which so much coverage has shrunk to 300-word sound bites, I'm delighted to be able to cover the dramatic changes in our industry in depth. Additionally, I look forward to reaching a huge number of engaged readers working in production and post, in the U.S. and internationally. Publisher Ronald Lindeboom and Editor-in-Chief Tim Wilson early on understood the importance of a web presence, and have created an astonishingly large audience both online and in print.”
Look forward to more great stories from Debra in Creative COW Magazine, and online here at CreativeCOW.net.
