Thousands of members of Creative COW were at the 2011 NAB Show, and we are pleased to bring you some of their reports. In this entry, Debra Kaufman looks at Quantel's showings, including QTube and Mission 2, Quantel’s latest asset management system. |
Quantel is another NAB stalwart; the company was a pioneer in computer graphics, and has transformed itself over and again through the years to stay on the bleeding edge of what the industry requires. The theme? As Quantel said itself, "key themes are expanding file-based workflow, enhancing integration and boosting high quality Stereo3D productivity."
The company had a lot to show at NAB 2011, for all the sectors of the market it serves. For Quantel, their shining star was QTube, a system that delivers "a truly global media workflow," allowing users quick and secure access to media assets anywhere there's an Internet connection. In addition to media viewing, QTube offers metadata editing, high-quality downloads and frame accurate editing. To prove the point, Quantel demonstrated QTube in Las Vegas, working with assets thousands of miles away.

Enterprise sQ is Quantel's "fast turnaround production system" mainly used by news and sports broadcasters. At NAB 2011, Enterprise sQ was shown with a new editor, a new workflow application and a completely revised and updated Media Asset Management System. Qube, the new editor for Enterprise sQ, delivers improved performance at lower cost than its predecessor sQ Edit Plus and is the first product in Quantel's broadcast range to take advantage of CUDA GPU accelerated processing. Qube includes 3G HDSDI interfaces and can handle 1080p60 and Stereo3D.

sQ Fileflow, the new workflow application for Enterprise sQ systems, offers tight integration with XDCAM HD, with fast and easy transfers of native XDCAM HD file assets into and out of sQ systems. Using an IT-friendly web services interface, sQ Fileflow makes it easier than before to efficiently integrate sQ into every workflow, such as long-gop playout servers and XDCAM HD archives.
Quantel also debuted Mission 2, the latest version of its Media Asset Management system with new features and a new clean interface. One key inclusion is full unicode support for Japanese, Korean and Chinese users.
With regard to stereoscopic 3D tools, Quantel also unveiled GeoFix, a tool that uses advanced image analysis to automatically fix camera geometry differences, and Disparity Checker, which provides real time measurement of stereo disparity. GeoFix and Disparity Checker will now be standard on all products including eQ in V5 software.

Quantel also announced integration-enhancing developments in post across eQ, iQ and Pablo, which include ARRIRAW support for the Alexa and D21 cameras, two-way native DNxHD file interchange and 16 channel audio i/o. Also debuting at NAB was Pablo PA, which boosts workflow by allowing non-creative tasks to be handled outside the main suite. Smooth metadata and essence interchange with the main suite ensure that adding Pablo PA into the workflow maintains flexibility and creative choice. At NAB GPU-accelerated processing makes Pablo PA even more productive.

Debra Kaufman
“I am thrilled to be joining the COW team,” said Debra Kaufman, newly named Associate Editor of Creative COW Magazine. “In an era in which so much coverage has shrunk to 300-word sound bites, I'm delighted to be able to cover the dramatic changes in our industry in depth. Additionally, I look forward to reaching a huge number of engaged readers working in production and post, in the U.S. and internationally. Publisher Ronald Lindeboom and Editor-in-Chief Tim Wilson early on understood the importance of a web presence, and have created an astonishingly large audience both online and in print.”
Look forward to more great stories from Debra in Creative COW Magazine, and online here at CreativeCOW.net.
